hey guys I'm in the dilemma of choosing a bike. I'm interested in the z125 pro as a bike. and if I got that bike then I would have a car as back up instead of a 650 as a dd. and full fill my childhood dream and make a hooligan bike/ sleeper

so the speed is a couple kms short of what I would like to run. where I live there is tones of city, but equally if not more highway. so to get past this I would be looking at a bbk, and oil cooler setup to up my speed. I'm looking at getting at least 130-140 km/ph, 80-87mph. but at the cost of everything $3k+ I figured why not pick up a $1k ninja 300 engine off ebay and shoe horn it in, but in my position I can only speculate.

I don't know what type of clearance is under the gas tank since the 300 engine is upright vs the z's lay down. nor am I going to be able to get the bike till next spring. but I have seen a couple groms out there with 300-450cc engine swaps

so for those of you that have the z do you think the 300 is do able? like even with mods it should be cheaper then going all out on a BBK right?

this is one of those things where it could take months to put together maybe even a year
many hours of custom fabricated parts, and many hours with the wiring if your good at figuring it out

anything is possible, just depends on the time you want it done and the cost
figure double what you think it will cost to get it done

I think I read a 250 cbr engine in a grom
and I think someone also did a 400cc engine too

personally I would buy a bigger bike
it will be more reliable, safer and cheaper in the end

keep the z125 for short in town trips its perfect for that
if its an issue with only being allowed to have one bike, then you need to make the decision on what to do

if you can have as many bikes as you can afford, I would do that
get different bikes for different uses

My guess is a big bore will be much cheaper and quicker to do
and im sure if you wait even larger options will be available in the future that will hopefully keep it reliable
just will take time for people to use them and repot back

im always amazed when people buy these small engine bikes and want an extra 10-20 more mph out of them
I've been buying and modding small bikes for years now for fun, and see this question all the time especially with the 49cc engines
no one is satisfied with the top speed with any size bike they buy

My buddy did the first CBR250 swap in the world on his grom and while it was fast and he loved it he said he would never do it again. The amount of fan work was insane. He owns a shop and builds race cars so that gives you an idea on his fab skills.

Yea true enough.... guys. It would be nice to do it eventually..... since i do need something more practical, but it's so cute looking. Only if they had a factory option for the 300's engine and taller wheels.

But for now the only thing going is either a 650 or some old out of style cruiser on Kijiji

The friend you're referring to, does he live in MD? I bought a bike for my son from a guy in PA that builds race cars in MD, it was his daughters old racing bike. That'd be a helluva coincidence. Lol

Go sit on the Z650. OMG. It is so nice and feels nimble. Same look just bigger.

I always felt these bikes would be best with a nice 450 motocross engine in them. Lightweight with 50+ horsepower. ****, even one of the performance 250 singles would be insane.

Do you want to die? KX450 motor on twelve inch wheels? **** while we're at it... KX500...

Somebody slapped a Panigale motor in a grom... I'm thinking maybe an H2 motor. You'll be able to hear the supercharger better. It'll sound like you're tickling a squirrel's nut sack.

But in all seriousness. I think the Ninja 250 or 300 motors would be a lot of fun.

I think I remember that Panigale being a Panigale with a Grom body glued to it or something.

The 450 might be a bit much, but I definately think a motocross single of some size makes more sense than small p-twin. I think it would be easier to fit and lend nicely to the light weight of the bike. I owned a Ninja 250 for a few years and the engine must have been about 4 times the size of the 125 single.
