I just nudged my left rear turn signal and it popped out -now I realize it’s only attached by a rubber grommet —is there some slick trick to put it back in short of dismantling the whole light assembly and using leverage from several different angles?

Slick trick? Throw them in the garbage and get an integrated tail light.

Not trying to be a smartass, but the stockers stick out WAY too far. It's actually the same lights they use on full size bikes. Not sure why Kawasaki thinks we need a whale tail back there.

Sounds like you may have been missing the metal backing plates. There's almost no way for the OEM signal to pop out. If you indeed do still have that metal plate still on the signal, remove it, then the signal will install easily. Lastly, put the metal plate back on.
