I'm looking at buying a '23 Z and want to do basic mods. My question is that, if I put a high flow intake (filter) and aftermarket exhaust, will the stock ECU compensate for it, based on info from the O2 sensor? I know the mods will make it run leaner and wondered if the stock ECU will still work without paying through the nose for a performance one.

Thanks for any advice!

We get asked this daily. The short answer is with an exhaust and intake, it won't blow up. Plenty of people run them that way forever. That said, it will not only run cooler at safer AFRs with a proper tune, but it will make FAR more power, which I'd assume is the reason people buy intakes and exhausts...

Kawasaki made a well tuned motor from the factory. Many guys do bolt on mods just to discover that they lost power all throughout the rpm range. I wouldn’t bother with just doing bolt ons…quick way to burn through your wallet and get worse performance. Now, if I was pairing them with a big bore kit, cam, and cylinder head work, then the bolt ons would be worth it

Open air filter and performance exhaust need more fuel to get the correct AFR, if you want the performance improvement they have to offer you will need to increase fuel supply, Dynojet or some other fuel controller will get the improvement. It's only a 125, a 10% HP improvement is less than 1 HP, not exactly earth moving. Sprocket changes & a quick turn throttle give the feeling of more power.
